a speck in the addict's eye

From my public health nursing textbook:

"Americans rely heavily on prescription and OTC [over the counter] drugs to relieve (or mask) anxiety, tension, fatigue, and physical or emotional pain. Rather than learning nonmedicinal methods of coping, many people rely on the "quick fix" and take pills to deal with their problems or negative feelings.
"Addicts are often viewed as immoral, weak-willed, or irresponsible persons who should try harder to help themselves." (Stanhope 2008)

Give us patience and compassion, wisdom and humility to face these issues, Lord. We need you desperately. We are unable to help ourselves. Show us your favor, and bring healing in and through us as we earnestly and patiently seek you and are made whole.

(for the record, I believe that there is an appropriate time and place for medication use in the above stated conditions...)
